Resonant Earth People is a mystery school founded by Jan "Mercury" Pekau.

I teach music as a transformative art that connects us deeper with ourselves, with community, and with Nature.

In service to this mission, I offer music for healing, wilderness trips, and community gatherings. I lead journeys into the wild places on Earth, and the wild places within Us.

Using deep listening practice, ritual, improvised group singing, physical challenge, teamwork, and awe-some wilderness adventure, I invite you to tune in to yourself, to people around you, and to this beautiful Earth. We can become connected to the core. We can experience a sense of union. We can gain greater health, connection to feeling, and responsibility for the Earth and All People.

Reconnecting People

I was born not breathing-- separated from my mother, and from my most primary rhythms. Like me, our world is out of sync. We hunger for something we do not know. What have we lost that pains us so?

Is it our sense of connection? You and I, don't we belong here? When I feel connected to the place where I live, I will not let that place be destroyed. When I feel connected to you, I am sensitive to your needs, and willing to cooperate. My sense of connection to my community and with the Earth are fundamental to my life, just like breathing.

Music is an ancient art. It teaches us so much about rhythm, connection, tuning in, and working together. Before history and language, humans and animals were making sounds in the forests and plains. No one knows where music comes from, but everyone feels its power. In a world divided by race, class, and gender, music offers a universal and magical link. In a society torn from Nature, music beckons us to return to a deeper rhythm.

That Honor Life's Rhythms

In the old world, music was woven into daily life. Not separate, not the realm of a gifted few. Music was for everyone, and yet it was so powerful. This is based on the recognition that All of Life is Music. Every atom, every organ in the body, every turning from winter into spring, is a vibration. Hearts beat, kidneys pump, electrons and planets orbit, bears emerge from hibernation, and tender shoots emerge once again from moist soil. When we become conscious of life's rhythms, we naturally entrain to them.

We are all musical beings. All of us have the capacity to feel and to create music. This ability is universal, and it is also fundamental. Without singing and dancing on the Earth, we become cut off from life's deeper rhythms. But with practice, we can develop an attunement to music. This is worth the effort. There is a language and an order in music, as there is an order in life. Resonant Earth People is a place for us to feel safe to explore our own rhythms, and to join into the greater rhythm of community.

No one will judge you for the sounds you make. But we will encourage you to be real, to peel off layers until your naked heart beats. And you will be guided into harmony, as we discover shared melodies and rhythms that connect us.

IMPROVISATION

I embrace improvisation, because it helps people stay authentic. This is the authenticity of honoring our feelings in this moment. We are not told to sing this and that. We choose to sing what resonates with us.

Improvisation, for me, is also an undressing. I look for the deeper layers, the greater nourishment in sound. My mind becomes quiet, and sounds emerge from an inner life current. I tune in to this life energy, and it's a great source of healing. When you join in with me, fantastic connection and transformation can happen.
